Redbridge Central Library, Clements Road, Ilford, IG1 1EA
Monday 19 June
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to Redbridge Central Library on Monday 19th June to celebrate the launch of a number of exciting spaces within the library which demonstrate the innovative and forward thinking approach that Vision RCL and Redbridge Council are taking in the delivery of library services, supporting heritage, technology, innovation and enterprise.
The first of these spaces has been created as a result of a successful bid to the Arts Council England’s Libraries Opportunities for Everyone Innovation Fund programme. Lab Central is a dynamic makerspace and digital learning lab which positions Redbridge Central Library as the main technology hub for Ilford Town Centre. This project creates an exciting opportunity for the library service to engage with new users and to broaden the library experience for existing customers. It also provides young people the opportunity to experience digital technology that would otherwise be unavailable to them. We will be animating the space with an extensive community engagement programme which includes a digital arts commission and residency, education programme, family learning events, tech meet ups and workshops for children and young people. Lab Central will be a place to imagine, to try new things, to learn, to create and to above all have fun. It will also be a centre for excellence and will be at the heart of our ambitions with a sustainable legacy beyond the initial March 2018 programme.
As a result of a successful 18 month pilot project, we have created a permanent facility which positions the library service at the heart of business support in Redbridge. Hub Central is a Skills, Employment and Enterprise hub where residents and local businesses can access co-working space, a range of resources including books, journals, newspapers, online materials, one to one expert independent business or employment advice, as well as a range of workshops, training, business networking events and opportunities delivered by a range of partners and providers. This exciting space boasts a new meeting room, an IT training suite, free Wi-Fi, wireless printing and co-working space.
Redbridge Heritage Centre
Redbridge Heritage Centre is a new space where anyone can explore a rich range of historic archives to discover the people, places and events in over 200,000 years of history in Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford
The Heritage Centre contains historic archives, books, building plans, maps, newspapers, photographs and online resources to help people research the history of their family, their house or the local area. Expert staff are available to support individual customers or groups to find out more.
In partnership with Redbridge Museum, a full programme of free taught local history sessions will be available for primary and secondary schools, as well as other groups.
The Heritage Centre will run regular workshops, talks and events to help residents discover Redbridge’s diverse history and encourage them to undertake their own research.
The Museum and the Heritage Centre will also help community groups to apply for funding for their own heritage project and offer a range of professional skills training including archiving, exhibitions, film making, oral history and research.
Redbridge Central Library is a short walk from Ilford Train Station with regular trains leaving from Liverpool Street and Stratford.
I do hope you will be able to join us and see the excellent work being undertaken by Vision and the results of ACE and other investment.
